FATBANG is emulsified DEER FAT.
FATBANG is supplied in two grades. Both are 1-part FATBANG: 2-part water spray mixes.
- For RESIDENTIAL users FATBANG comes as a 4L concentrate that makes up 12L+ final spray.
- For FORESTRY users FATBANG is supplied as a 20L concentrate that makes up 60L final spray.
Tallow has been used successfully in Europe for several decades to repel deer & browsing animals from damaging trees, plants, food and forage crops. Tallow works by emitting a natural odour, taste and texture that is repulsive to animals.
The FATBANG advantage:
- The smell, taste and texture of fat is repulsive to a wide range of browsers
- Deer fat is naturally innately repulsive to deer
- Does not harm the tree
- 100% natural active ingredients
- Uses byproduct from our meat processing industries
- Made in New Zealand for our pests and plants
- Easy to handle - just add water then spray
- The fat coating is resilient and resistant to light and rain degradation
- Safe on the environment - no agrichemicals or poisons
- Longer lasting protection effective for up to 6 months
FATBANG COVERAGE
It is difficult to estimate coverage since every site and application is different. You may be spraying established trees and vegetation OR planted-out seedlings OR pre-planted seedlings still packed in a box!
However, coverage estimates based on 20mL average for a 500mm already planted-out tree seedlings means that each 1L of final spray will treat about 50 planted seedlings. This should be sufficient for a full spray coat on a tree/plant of this size. So for the FORESTRY grade a 60L final spray mix would cover about 3000+ seedlings.
For all trees just cover the growth points and branch edges that are prone to attack, not the whole tree. LESS IS MORE just a whiff of repellent is all that is needed. Do not drown the plant!
If you are applying the spray to seedlings that are still in the box packed in bulk then expect more coverage as all that is required is a spray along the tops. A final mix spray would cover approximately 10 times the above estimate. Remember that the plants will be greasy to handle until they have dried.
IF IN DOUBT ABOUT THE SUITABILITY OF THE SPRAY THEN ALWAYS TRIAL THE REPELLENT ON A SMALL NUMBER OF TREES AND WAIT A WEEK TO SEE IF ANY PROBLEMS.
HOW DOES FATBANG DEER AND RABBIT REPELLENT WORK?
Decaying animal protein or fat is repulsive to herbivores - they associate the smell with predators. So, a topical spray is the best method to deter browsing. Systemic repellents are useless because they rely on the pest having a decent chew to get the supposedly bad chemical taste...but by then it's too late as the plant is stuffed. What's the point then? As you know, all it takes is a nip off the top of growth points and the tree either dies or is distorted, and this can set it back years!
The BEST approach is to stop them from having a chew in the first place - hence why topical sprays are the ONLY solution - and that's based on published research! The pest MUST be deterred BEFORE chewing the plant!
HOW OFTEN DO I RE-APPLY FATBANG?
FATBANG is fat-based and forms a fat coating over the tree. Expect about 3-6 months protection depending on ambient conditions. DO NOT reapply more than about 2-monthly.
IS FATBANG 100% EFFECTIVE AT REPELLING DEER AND RABBITS?
NO...no repellent is 100% effective. Depends on how hungry or curious the browser is. For goats or stock then expect the worst! A secure mesh fence is about the only effective barrier. However, a plant coated with FATBANG will deter herbivore browsers and encourage them to dine elsewhere, so your plant will be a last resort.
HOW DO I MIX UP THE FINAL SPRAY?
The RESIDENTIAL concentrate version can make between 12-15L of final spray. It is a 1-part FATBANG: 2-part Water mix. So, if you want to use up the whole 4L of concentrate then add nominally 8L of water!
Note: Thin it out with up to another 3L of water - which would make up a total 15L final spray.
Mix it ideally with a high-speed drill with an attachment for about 1 minute OR if you do not have a drill attachment then just add it to the water in your backpack sprayer and swirl it around. It is already emulsified and should mix easily. See our Spray Instructions blog.
DOES FATBANG BURN PLANTS?
Some plants are more sensitive than others - like ferns, blossoms or flowers. There are thousands of plants/grasses/trees, etc out there and we can't test them all! So, if in doubt please test spray a few plants that you think could be sensitive, then wait a week to observe problems. Native trees, forestry and common shelter-belt varieties seem to be fine with no observed negative effects. Do not use on leafy greens or other edible vegetables or fruit as the residual fat coat may not be a good taste sensation! If you just want to test FATBANG without committing to the 4L or 20L concentrate, then get our 1L premixed sample pack.
BEST TIME TO SPRAY FATBANG?
MAKE SURE you do NOT spray when the tree is stressed in any way. Plants should be well hydrated, not in a drought or hot weather. Spray early morning or evenings...the tree/plant MUST BE DRY for the fluid to stick. Hold off spraying other products on target trees for at least a week either side of a FATBANG application.
IF RAIN IS DUE THEN HOLD OFF TO THE NEXT DRY DAY!
CAUTION: Once mixed use the spray that same day or the next. Although FATBANG is safe to use, avoid skin or eye contact, do not breathe in or swallow. Just take sensible precautions!
Store away from heat and light, well-sealed and away from children. Wash hands after use. WASH OUT AND RECYCLE THE CONTAINER AFTER USE. KEEP AWAY FROM WATERWAYS WHEN SPRAYING.
